New Beginning
Phase 3 was kind of like a roller coaster. We liked our ideas but were not really sure about it but still went with it just in hopes that something will come out of this idea and we will become passionate about it. Abbie and I had a moment where we mentioned taking a complete twist on the idea and we actually liked that thought. That is when I knew that I want to work on something that I felt more passionate about than what we currently had.
We took a step back and decided to look at all the ideas we have had in the past and we kept talking about the Story in a Story idea. We always wanted to make a narrative based game or an interactive story, and what we had done with the Upside Island idea is that we tried to make in into a puzzle adventure. After realizing where our passion lies in, we brought back the Story in a Story idea and discussed how we might be tackling this and making it better than it was.
Abbie immediately started looking into the narrative aspect of the game while i started looking into mechanics, camera movement and environment. We still had not discussed this with Kerris as we were not in university so we arranged a group meeting with Adam.
Adam seemed pleased with our new idea and so did Kerris. It was good to see everyone on board. As we were starting over with our idea, Adam told us to present our new idea next Friday. We only had a week to build the structure of the game and come up with some mechanics to prototype so we started off with finalizing the structure of the narrative. We were struggling with it as we all had different thoughts on it so we decided to trust Abbie with her story writing skills and let her deal with it and once she is done we can give her some constrictive criticism if required at all while Kerris started mapping out the world. I on the other hand started working on two prototypes. One was based on building a texture painting library and the other one was the "Book interaction" prototype. The next two blogs would focus on these prototypes.
towards the end of that single day, we had come up with a solid story (Story structure), Character concepts, Environment Mood boards, level layouts and prototype ideas. I could feel how passionate we all were about this and we all felt excited to make this game come to life.
